Jazmin Conway (University of Plymouth, UK), a 2nd year doctoral candidate of the SA/UK ADD Hub Consortium , attended the 4th International Workshop for Early Career Researchers organized by iimena (integration of Informatics and Metabolic Engineering for the discovery of Novel Antibiotics). The workshop was themed around Genome-mining for Natural Products, and sought to equip attendees with the knowledge to rapidly identify, annotate and analyze biosynthetic gene clusters in bacterial and fungal genomes. At this workshop, Jazz presented a poster entitled: “Deep Sea Sponge Associated Bacteria and their Antimicrobial Capabilities”, which presents the antimicrobial drug discovery work she is undertaking for her PhD. Her participation in this Workshop has gained her valuable hands-on experience using a suite of bioinformatics tools (e.g. Norine, BiG-SCAPE, BiG-FAM, antiSMASH or the antiSMASH database), and using her own dataset, Jazz completed the workshop with a fully annotated genome and plentiful results to include in her thesis. Jazz reflected that: “Attending this workshop has provided me with valuable training in bioinformatics, and I have gained a real understanding of the process, and the reliability of results generated.”
